Context

The holiday year in the United States

The US federal calendar has eleven holidays, and most of them are fixed to a Monday so they create long weekends. The year has a clear rhythm: a winter cluster of three holidays from January to February, a long gap through spring, Memorial Day to Labor Day framing the summer, and a dense run from October to December. Tax Day in April and the start of school in August are the other two dates that shape most household plans.

Behind the dates

New Year's Day
New Year's Day marks the first day of the Gregorian calendar year. Most workplaces and schools close, and it is the traditional moment to hang a new wall calendar.
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Honors the civil rights leader, who was born on January 15, 1929. The holiday was signed into law in 1983, first observed in 1986, and falls on the third Monday of January. Many people treat it as a day of service.
Washington's Birthday
The official federal name for the holiday most people call Presidents' Day. It was moved to the third Monday of February by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, so it never actually falls on Washington's birthday, February 22.
Memorial Day
Honors the men and women who died while serving in the US military. It falls on the last Monday of May and has its roots in Decoration Day, when graves were decorated after the Civil War.
Juneteenth National Independence Day
Marks June 19, 1865, when Union troops announced in Galveston, Texas, that enslaved people were free. It became a federal holiday in 2021, the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Independence Day
Celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. When July 4 falls on a weekend, the federal day off moves to the nearest weekday, which is why the marked date can be July 3 or July 5.
Labor Day
Honors American workers and the labor movement. It has been a federal holiday since 1894 and falls on the first Monday of September, the traditional end of the summer season.
Columbus Day
Commemorates Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas in 1492 and falls on the second Monday of October. Many states and cities observe the same day as Indigenous Peoples' Day instead.
Veterans Day
Honors everyone who has served in the US armed forces. It stays on November 11, the anniversary of the 1918 armistice that ended fighting in World War I, whatever day of the week that is.
Thanksgiving Day
Falls on the fourth Thursday of November. Many employers also give the Friday after, so it often becomes a four-day weekend and one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Christmas Day
Celebrates the birth of Jesus and is a public holiday across all four countries covered here. When December 25 falls on a weekend, a substitute weekday off is usually given.

Printing

Printing tips

  • Choose A4 outside North America and Letter in the United States and Canada; the two layouts are otherwise identical, with the same generous margins.
  • In the print dialog, set the scale to 100% or "Actual size". "Fit to page" quietly shrinks the grid and softens the lines.
  • Landscape is the better default for the yearly sheet: twelve mini months read naturally across the page, three or four to a row.
  • For a wall calendar that stays flat, print on heavier paper, around 160 to 200 gsm.

Planning

Planning notes for 2026

  • March, April, July, and December have the most working days in 2026 (22), and February and November the fewest (19).
  • The US holidays create eight long weekends in 2026: Jan 17 to Jan 19 (Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.), Feb 14 to Feb 16 (Washington's Birthday), May 23 to May 25 (Memorial Day), Jun 19 to Jun 21 (Juneteenth National Independence Day), Jul 3 to Jul 5 (Independence Day), Sep 5 to Sep 7 (Labor Day), Oct 10 to Oct 12 (Columbus Day), and Dec 25 to Dec 27 (Christmas Day).
  • Clocks go forward one hour on Sunday, March 8 and back on Sunday, November 1 in most of the United States (Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time).
