Context

January in Australia

January in Australia is the height of summer. The national holidays are New Year's Day and Australia Day on January 26, the anniversary of the First Fleet's arrival at Sydney Cove in 1788, a date many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people mark as a day of mourning. School summer holidays run through most of the month, with the new school year starting in late January or early February.

Behind the dates

New Year's Day
New Year's Day marks the first day of the Gregorian calendar year. Most workplaces and schools close, and it is the traditional moment to hang a new wall calendar.
Australia Day
Marks the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove on January 26, 1788. It is celebrated with citizenship ceremonies and community events, and many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people mark it as a day of mourning.

Printing

Printing tips

  • Choose A4 outside North America and Letter in the United States and Canada; the two layouts are otherwise identical, with the same generous margins.
  • In the print dialog, set the scale to 100% or "Actual size". "Fit to page" quietly shrinks the grid and softens the lines.
  • Portrait is the classic wall format; landscape gives each day a wider box if you write big or plan in two colors.
  • For a wall calendar that stays flat, print on heavier paper, around 160 to 200 gsm.

Planning

Planning notes for January 2026

  • The first working day of January 2026 is Friday, January 2, and the last is Friday, January 30.
  • Saturday, January 24 to Monday, January 26 is a three-day weekend (Australia Day).
  • New Year's Day on Thursday, January 1 falls in the middle of the week, so on its own it does not create a long weekend.
  • Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays appear five times this month and the other days four times, so a weekly class, bin day, or payment that falls on one of them comes around once more than usual.
