Printable calendars with a notes section

The month name and year sit at the top in large type, with one line under them reading US Federal Holidays · Week starts Sunday. Below comes the grid: day names from SUN to SAT, then four, five or six week rows, whatever the month needs. Numbers sit in the top left corner of each cell, and Saturday and Sunday numbers are grey rather than black, so the weekend reads as a block without any shading. Days belonging to the month before or after are left out, so the first and last rows have genuinely empty cells to write in.

A federal holiday gets three marks: the number turns red, the holiday name is printed under it inside the cell, and the cell takes a pale red tint. At the foot of the page the same holidays repeat on one line, for example Sep 6 Labor Day, with printemplates.com at the other end. Nothing else is printed: no week numbers, no moon phases, no advertising, no logo taking a corner of the grid.

It runs down the right hand side of the page, level with the grid, separated from the last day column by a 5 mm gutter. It takes 28 per cent of the printable width: about 53 mm on A4 and 54 mm on Letter, a little over two inches, roughly the width of a supermarket receipt. Enough for a short line of writing, not enough for a sentence that wanders.

The word NOTES is set in letter spaced capitals at the top, and under it are sixteen ruled lines spread evenly down the full height of the grid. They are deliberately generous, about 14.5 mm apart on A4 and 13.4 mm on Letter, which is roughly double a notebook ruling. That suits a marker and most adult handwriting on a wall sheet, and a small hand fits two lines in each space, turning sixteen rules into thirty two usable lines.

Two honest limits. The column is always on the right, in all forty eight files and in the calendar maker too, so there is no left hand version of this layout. And the count of rules is fixed at sixteen: widening the column makes each line longer, not more numerous.

A sheet of paper is a fixed amount of space, so the column comes out of the width of the days. This is the part most download pages leave out, so here it is measured.

On A4 portrait a plain month gives each day a cell 27.1 mm wide. With the notes column beside it, each day gets 18.6 mm. That is a third narrower, and it is the whole of the cost. Height is untouched: a five row month gives 46.1 mm per row with the column and 45.0 mm without it, so the cells gain a fraction of a millimetre. February 2026, the only four row month in this set, gets 57.7 mm rows; the five months that need six rows get 38.4 mm.

The week's list. Dated tasks go in the day they are due, undated ones in the column. Sixteen lines is about right for a month of things that need doing but do not need doing on a Tuesday.

Groceries and meal planning. Meals go in the days, the shopping list that follows from them goes in the column, and the two stay on one sheet on the fridge door instead of on a scrap that goes missing.

Shift notes. A rota entry is short: an S, an N, a start time, all of which fit the narrow cells. What does not fit is the swap you agreed with a colleague, the overtime you are owed and the leave you have asked for. That is what the column holds.

Teaching. The term month in the days, the material list beside it: books to order, sheets to copy, a reminder about the trip form.

Household admin. Bills, renewals, appointments to book, the boiler service, the passport that expires in the spring. These have deadlines but no natural day, which is exactly what a monthly grid alone has nowhere to put.

These files carry the combination most people searching for a notes calendar in English are after: Sunday first, US federal holidays, portrait. The other combinations exist too, but publishing them all as static files would mean hundreds of near identical PDFs, so they are built on demand instead.

The holidays marked are the eleven federal ones: New Year's Day and the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. in January, Washington's Birthday in February, Memorial Day in May, Juneteenth in June, Independence Day in July, Labor Day in September, Columbus Day in October, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving in November, and Christmas Day in December. March, April and August have no federal holiday at all, so on those sheets the holiday line at the foot of the page is simply blank.

Where a holiday falls at a weekend, the sheet marks the observed weekday rather than the calendar date, because that is the day the offices are shut. Independence Day appears on Friday 3 July 2026 and Monday 5 July 2027, and Christmas Day appears on Friday 24 December 2027.
