Measured
What is bigger, and by exactly how much
Pages that call themselves large print rarely say large compared to what. Here are the two sheets side by side, both A4, both January 2027, measured off the printed page.
The number. On the standard monthly sheet a day number is set at 12.5 pt and puts 3.1 mm of ink on the paper. Here it is set at 20 pt and stands 5.1 mm. That is 1.6 times the height, and because a digit grows in both directions at once, roughly 2.6 times the area of ink.
The margin. The page border drops from 10.0 mm to 8.0 mm. Two millimetres an edge buys 4 mm of extra grid width and about 15 mm of extra grid height, which is what keeps the boxes from shrinking under the bigger numbers.
The box. Columns go from 27.1 to 27.7 mm wide, and in a six week month the rows go from 37.0 to 39.5 mm tall. The grid as a block grows from 190.0 by 221.8 mm to 194.0 by 236.7 mm, about 9% more paper given to the calendar itself.
The rule. Every day box carries one faint writing rule 1.8 mm above its bottom edge: 35 of them on a five week sheet. One line stops handwriting drifting downhill across a 24 mm box and leaves the top of the box clear for the number.

The trade
A bigger number eats writing room
A sheet of paper does not grow, so every millimetre the number takes is a millimetre the writing does not get. On these files that cost was paid at the page edge rather than inside the box, which is why the margin came down to 8 mm. Measured from the bottom of the number to the writing rule, a six week month leaves 30.9 mm of clear height in a box 24.2 mm wide; the standard sheet leaves 29.6 mm in a box 22.2 mm wide. You are not losing room against the ordinary month page. You are spending the border instead.
Push further and that stops being true. The maker takes the number scale up to three times normal, and past roughly double it starts eating the top third of a six week box: a sheet you read rather than one you write on. A fair trade, if reading it is the job.
And plainly: 5.1 mm is a measurement, not a promise. These are ordinary print files, they have been through no accessibility audit, and this page makes no claim about what any particular person will find comfortable. Print one and see whether the difference is the one you needed.
Row count
Six week months have shorter boxes
The grid gets a fixed 236.7 mm of height on A4 and divides it by however many week rows the month needs. That is the one variable this page cannot flatten.
Four week month. Boxes are 27.7 by 59.2 mm, with 50.6 mm of clear height under the number. Only February 2026 manages it, beginning on a Sunday and running exactly 28 days. It is the roomiest sheet in the set.
Five week month. Boxes are 27.7 by 47.4 mm, with 38.7 mm of clear height. Eighteen of the twenty four months land here, so this is the normal case.
Six week month. Boxes drop to 27.7 by 39.5 mm, with 30.9 mm of clear height. Five months need it: May 2026, August 2026, January 2027, May 2027 and October 2027, all flagged in the download list so nothing surprises you at the printer. That is about 8 mm less box height than a five week sheet, roughly a line of adult handwriting. If one of those months matters, the maker has a minimum row height you can raise directly.
Holidays
The holiday is written out, not dotted
Every US federal holiday gets three things: a pale pink tint over the box, the day number in red instead of black, and the holiday name in small type directly under it. The names are the official federal ones, so the third Monday of February reads Washington's Birthday rather than Presidents Day, and the third Monday of January reads Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., wrapping onto two lines. A single line under the grid repeats the month's holidays in short form.
Dense layouts often mark a holiday with a coloured dot and put the names in a key at the foot. On a sheet meant to be read across a room that is backwards: a 2 mm dot is the first thing to vanish at distance. Spelling the name out costs a few millimetres of writing area on eleven days a year, and the writing rule sits low enough never to cross a two line name.
In use
Where a bigger number earns its place
A wall calendar nobody stands in front of. A sheet pinned above a desk is read from the desk, not from the pin. If you check the date over your shoulder or from the doorway, the number does all the work and the rest of the page is decoration.
A shared kitchen or office board. Several people write on one sheet and everyone else reads it in passing. The failure mode is not that the calendar is wrong, it is that nobody looks at it, and a page you lean into is a page you stop consulting.
A classroom wall. Thirty people at thirty distances, and the back row decides whether the calendar works. The boxes still take a date, a name or a homework mark.
Thick pens and markers. A chisel tip marker lays down a 4 to 5 mm stroke, most of a small calendar box before the first word is finished. A 27.7 by 47.4 mm box takes two or three marker words comfortably and the rule keeps them level. Laminate one and the sheet resets every month.
Anyone who finds small type slow going. Reading glasses in another room, poor light in a hallway, a page taped inside a cupboard door, tired eyes at the end of a shift. A number 1.6 times taller is easier in all of those and costs nothing to try.
One caveat in the same spirit as the rest of this page: Saturday and Sunday numbers print in mid grey rather than black, which is how the whole site marks the weekend and is lower contrast by design. The maker has a switch that puts all seven days in the same solid ink.
Printing
Printing notes
- Set the print scale to 100% or "Actual size". "Fit to page" undoes the point of the sheet: it shrinks the page to clear your printer's unprintable border, and the 5.1 mm number comes out nearer 4.8 mm.
- Choose A4 outside North America and Letter in the United States and Canada. Letter columns are wider at 28.5 mm and Letter rows about 3 mm shorter, because the sheet itself is shorter.
- To go bigger than A4, print the A4 file on A3 at 141% scale, set by hand rather than by "fit to page". At 141% the day number stands 7.2 mm and a six week box measures 39.2 by 55.8 mm. "Fit to page" on A3 lands near 137% instead, and you lose the round number.
- The 8 mm margin is inside the unprintable border of some inkjets. Nothing important lives out there, so if your printer clips, let it clip the white rather than scaling the grid down.
- For a wall sheet, heavier paper around 160 to 200 gsm stops the page curling. Grayscale printing is safe: the holiday tint is faint by design and renders as light grey rather than vanishing.

If 1.6 times is not enough
Forty-eight fixed files cannot suit every wall, and the size of the number is exactly the setting people want to move. In the calendar maker the day number scale is a slider from 0.5 to 3 in steps of 0.05. Three controls next to it matter as much: a minimum row height, so you can force tall boxes even in a six week month; the page margin, which is what the grid grows into; and the writing rules per day, from none up to four. Holiday marking switches between the full name, a dot and nothing, and the weekend numbers between the muted grey used here and solid weekday ink.
